Decoding Shakespeare – Angela Ward

This session will teach a methodology for exploring Shakespeare using samples of text (provided), and showing how parallel texts and summaries are not only NOT needed, but can be harmful.  We will examine Cymbeline and Romeo and Juliet.  Cymbeline, classified as a romance, or tragic-comedy, is little known today, and offers wonderful “morality lessons” as well as humor and adventure. In contrast, Romeo and Juliet, one of his most famous tragedies, has been battered and inverted by modernity.  It is a play resplendent with valuable lessons for both parents and children, which current culture tends to devalue and overlook.   A look at its text, along with commentaries of the period is very valuable for the serious student of Shakespeare who wishes to understand what Shakespeare actually wrote, rather than what artists and scholars have created.
